How can we help?

Write to support@carbanter.com and a person will answer by email.

Contact us

Email support@carbanter.com. To help us answer quickly, include:

  • your phone model, and whether it is an iPhone or an Android phone;
  • your Banter handle, if you have an account;
  • what you were doing, what you expected and what happened, with a screenshot if you can.

Please never send us a password, for Banter or for any other site. We will never ask for one.

Common questions

How do I sign in with the code?
  1. Open the Garage, then Settings, then "Sign in or create an account".
  2. Enter your email address and tap "Send me a code".
  3. Open the email from Banter and type the six-digit code into "Code from the email", then tap "Sign in".

Banter has no password. The first time you sign in, you choose your handle, which is the name other members see.

If the email does not arrive within a few minutes, check your spam or junk folder, make sure the address is spelled correctly, and ask for a new code. Use the newest code you received. If it still does not arrive, write to us.

You only need an account to post in Banter's own community, send messages and get alerts. Reading needs no account.

How do I connect a forum?
  1. When you add a car, motorcycle, RV, boat or aircraft, Banter suggests forums and clubs for it. Choose the ones you want.
  2. Later, you can add more from the Garage, then Settings, then Communities. Search for the forum and open it.
  3. Banter shows the forum's own sign-in page. Sign in there, exactly as you would in a browser, and tap "I am signed in".

Your password goes only to the forum. Banter never sees or stores it, and your sign-in stays on your phone. If you do not have an account on that forum yet, create it on the same page.

If a forum asks you to complete a security check, complete it on the forum's page and tap "Done". Banter never completes a check for you. Some sites are listed as "Not available in Banter yet", with the reason; they cannot be connected for now.

To disconnect a forum, open it in Communities and choose "Disconnect". Its threads leave your feed; your account on the forum is not changed.

What happens when I ask for a summary?

The first time, Banter asks your permission and names the service that writes summaries. Only then, and only when you ask, the text of that thread is sent through Banter's server to that service, and the summary comes back to your phone. Banter's server does not keep the text. You can turn this off in Settings, under "Summaries and answers". The privacy policy has the details.

How do I delete my account?
  1. Open the Garage, then Settings, then Account.
  2. Choose "Delete my account" and confirm.

This removes your account, handle, threads, replies and messages from Banter's server. It cannot be undone. Your garage and its history stay on your phone until you use "Start over" in Settings or remove the app.

Deleting your account does not cancel a subscription. Cancel it in your store's settings first (see below).

If you can no longer open the app, write to privacy@carbanter.com from your account's email address and we will delete it for you. The account deletion page lists exactly what is removed.

How do I cancel a subscription?

Subscriptions are managed by the store you bought them from. Cancel at least 24 hours before the renewal date to avoid the next charge.

On an iPhone: open the Settings app, tap your name, then Subscriptions, choose Banter and tap Cancel Subscription.

On an Android phone: open the Google Play Store app, tap your profile picture, then Payments and subscriptions, then Subscriptions, choose Banter and tap Cancel subscription.

You keep your level until the end of the period you paid for, a month or a year. Refunds are handled by Apple or Google under their own policies.

How do I restore my purchases on a new phone?
  1. Sign in to the same Apple ID or Google account you used to subscribe.
  2. Install Banter and open it.
  3. Choose "Restore purchases" where the app shows the Banter levels.

Your level returns on the new phone, for every kind you hold a plan for. Restoring a purchase does not move your garage and its history, which are stored on the phone where you created them.

Which kinds of thing can I add?

Cars, motorcycles, RVs, boats and aircraft, as the app offers them. A car, a bike or a rig is added by its vehicle identification number or by make, model and year; a boat by its hull identification number, which Banter decodes on your phone; an aircraft by its tail number. Each kind has its own words in the app (your boats live in the Dock, your aircraft in the Hangar), its own communities and its own plan. A garage can hold several kinds at once.

A boat's page can show the tides at a home port you enter, an aircraft's page the latest weather report at a home airport, an RV's page the active weather alerts for the state of a home ZIP code, each read by your phone from the public agency and named as such. They are for interest only: Banter is not a navigation or flight-planning tool, and the owner's manual, a qualified technician and the agency's own publications have the final word.

Why are there videos in my feed, and can I turn them off?

Banter shows the titles of new videos from a few well-known channels for what is in your garage, with the channel's name and YouTube's preview picture. Tapping one opens the video on YouTube; nothing plays inside Banter. Turn them off under Feed settings, "Videos in my feed".

Why is my feed empty?

The feed follows your garage. Add a car, a bike, a rig, a boat or an aircraft first, then connect at least one community. If a community shows a notice, open it in Banter and follow the instructions on the site's own page. The Community check in Settings shows which communities Banter can read at the moment, and the community connections page lists every community and its standing.

Will Banter ever post for me?

No. Nothing is posted without your own confirmation, for each reply and each community. Banter never posts automatically or in the background.

How do I make text larger?

Choose Easy View in Settings, under "Text size", for larger text and buttons. Banter also follows the text size you set on your phone.
